A World Without Words

Timeline

The graphic designer Tony Arefin published A World Without Words in an edition of 1000 in November 1992. The book arose from Jasper’s World Slide Show, first shown in Milan in 1988. Lars Müller modified the book only a little when he published it in 1998.

In 1991 Tony Arefin, a graphic designer who was involved with the new art magazine Frieze, came to interview me for it. He asked if he could make a book out of the slide show, which he did beautifully, in an edition of a thousand copies. The book title evolved as ‘a world without words’ partly as a reference to the nature of the material and partly as a reference to the ‘no comment’ strategy.

A postcard to launch the book.
